Ranbir Kapoor to Bring the Epic Ramayana Back to Life as Lord Rama 2025

The Ramayana, one of India’s most beloved and seminal epics, is set to be adapted into an extravagant 3-part film series starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama.

With acclaimed director Nitesh Tiwari of Dangal and Chhichhore fame helming the project, expectations are sky-high for this multi-movie magnum opus centered around Rama’s early life in Ayodhya.

The production is shaping up to be monumental in scale and one of India’s costliest film projects ever with budgets estimated over ₹1000 crores.

Made by one of India’s largest production houses Aditya Chopra’s Yash Raj Films, elaborate sets are being constructed showcasing the majestic temples, opulent palaces, bustling streets that bring Ayodhya’s utopian glory to life.

  • With advances in current VFX technology, magical fantasy elements from the Ramayana like the celestial pushpaka vimana flying chariot or the army of playful vanars and sinister rakshasas should be brought to life far more convincingly than the TV series of the 1980s

“We aim to capture the full majesty and details of Lord Rama’s Ayodhya and portray his inspiring journey from dutiful prince to exiled warrior to rightful king,” shared an insider spokesperson closely involved with the production.

Ranbir Kapoor has awed fans by radically transforming himself physically and emotionally into varied characters like Sanjay Dutt in Sanju or a streetfighter in Rocket Singh.

But the role of Lord Rama, revered as ‘maryada purushottam’ – the ideal upholder of dharma, represents his most ambitious acting challenge yet.

Ranbir’s Meticulous Preparation Over 12 Months for His Most Iconic Role

Known for his intense commitment to each acting endeavor, Ranbir has been actively prepping for almost 12 months now to portray the revered mythical figure both physically and emotionally.

Look Tests Finalized Bespoke Costume and Styling

In tandem, the film’s creative directors have finalized bespoke costumes, styling and makeup after months of consultations and look tests to achieve the fine balance between boyish charm and dignified grace expected of the noble prince.

Filming kickstarted only once Ranbir’s entire appearance convincingly matched the visual iconography of lord Rama enshrined over millennia in temple sculptures and ancient Indian artistic traditions.

“I feel blessed for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pay small tribute to Lord Rama’s timeless story that reflects dilemmas all of us face in upholding moral courage in trying circumstances,” shared an excited Ranbir Kapoor.

Shooting Begins on Extravagant Ayodhya Fort Palace Sets

The first intense schedule of filming has finally commenced after months of groundwork on resplendent sets recreating Ayodhya Nagri’s bustling streets and Rama’s opulent palace interiors.

Grand exterior shots in the viral behind-the-scenes video showcase the intricate stone carvings and golden etched pillars that characterize ancient Vedic architecture aesthetics.

The iconic role marks Ranbir Kapoor’s first ever onscreen portrayal of an Indian historical or mythological character in his eclectic acting career.

His pan-Indian fanbase now eagerly awaits leaked paparazzi photos and official glimpses of him visually bringing Lord Rama to life amidst regal scenes designed to justify Ayodhya’s utopian glory as the ideal Hindu rashtra.

Success Not Guaranteed Despite Ambitious Vision

However, with Ajay Devgn also starring as Lord Ram in Om Raut’s action-oriented Ram Setu releasing 5 months earlier in Diwali 2025, Ranbir’s film faces increasingly tough box office competition.

Strategic planning around generating pre-release buzz through leaks and officially dropped promotional content like songs, teaser trailers & ideal release dates will be crucial.

Ranbir v/s Ajay box office clashes have a mixed record – while Raajneeti comfortably exceeded Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai’s numbers back in 2010, Shamshera fell short of Tanhaji’s lifetime business just last year proving the enduring popularity of Devgn’s historically charged entertainers.

Given sky-high expectations, only time will tell whether Ranbir’s visually stunning Ramayana trilogy that banks heavily on emotional drama and moral dilemmas manages to achieve Baahubali level popularity across India or falls short of humongous expectations.
