TX2K: Single Turbo Shelby GT500 Steals the Show at 2024

The TX2K drag racing event is one of the premier street car competitions in the country. The 2024 edition was held March 12-17 at the famous Texas Motorplex in Ennis, TX, and featured some of the quickest street vehicles around.

The Shelby GT500 Showstopper

One car stole the spotlight from all others at TX2K 2024 – a sinister black Ford Shelby Mustang GT500. Built by owner John Urist with the team at Modular Motorsports Racing, this GT500 utilized a single turbo setup to produce an estimated 1,500 horsepower.

Some key specs on this Shelby GT500:

  • Modifications:
    • Single turbocharger
    • Built engine
    • Upgraded driveline and suspension components
  • Output: 1,500whp on race gas
  • Best Pass: 6.47 sec @ 209 mph

With this level of power on tap, the GT500 was making short work of its competition all week long.

Quarter Mile Dominance

Run after run, this menacing turbocharged GT500 left competitors in its rearview mirror:

  • 6.76 sec pass against twin turbo Mustang GT
  • 7.01 sec pass against supercharged Shelby GT500
  • 6.8 sec win against blown ’67 Shelby GT500

No matter what Mustang pulled up alongside it, the single turbo GT500 dispatched them with ease, consistently running mid-6 or low-7 second passes all week.

Building a High Power Shelby GT500

For those looking to build their own high horsepower GT500, some common modifications include:

  • Forced induction (turbocharger or supercharger kits)
  • Built engine internals
  • Upgraded fuel system
  • Sticky DOT drag radial tires
  • Suspension braces and chassis stiffening
  • Race gas tune optimizing timing and boost

Power levels of 1,000+ horsepower can be achieved on otherwise stock engines before needing to build the internals. It’s important to upgrade supporting mods to match your power goals.

More TX2K 2024 Event Highlights

While the turbo Shelby stole the spotlight in many races, there were plenty of other record-setting machines at TX2K 2024:

  • Dodge Charger Hellcat sets world record 7.52 sec pass
  • 1,600 hp Lamborghini Huracan goes 198 mph
  • C8 Corvette goes 5.88 sec at over 250 mph
  • Multiple crashes and spinouts caught on video

Shelby GT500 Finally Meets Its Match

After decimating the competition all week long, the single turbo Shelby GT500 finally met its match in the championship finals. Going up against the Street Car Elite champion Snot Rocket 2.0 Mustang, also a GT500, the single turbo GT500 posted its best run of the event at 6.47 sec @ 209 mph.

However, it wasn’t enough to dethrone Snot Rocket 2.0 and its monster 2,930 horsepower Coyote V8 engine, which ran an incredible 6.25 sec pass to get the event victory. Still, 2nd place was mightily impressive for a GT500 keeping its factory Coyote engine design intact.

This event showed that with the right modifications, the Shelby GT500 can run with and beat just about anything on the street or strip. Over 1,500 tire-shredding horsepower proved the twin turbo setup is a forced to be reckoned with!
